Beware of dangerous chemicals
Commonly used chemicals, in the wrong hands they’re lethal
In recent years, common chemicals have been successfully used in terrorist attacks throughout the world. These chemicals have been easily obtained by terrorists as they are found in everyday products, including beauty, domestic, agricultural, veterinary and industrial products.
In many cases, terrorists purchase chemicals from the same locations as the general public. For business, your vigilance in ‘knowing your customer’ could make a difference in preventing a terrorist attack.
The Australian Government, in partnership with state and territory governments, is working closely with industry to keep Australia safe from terrorism.
There are a number of key considerations that may assist your organisation in identifying suspicious behaviour associated with the purchasing or stockpiling of chemicals of security concern.
As a business owner or employee, you should:
• be alert to unusual or large purchases of chemicals
• confirm the customers’ intended use for the chemicals
• note whether the chemicals were paid for in cash or credit
• ask the customer to provide adequate identification, and
• be alert to evasive or nervous behaviour.
Depending on your role within an organisation, there are a number of key steps to follow when responding to suspicious behaviour.
As a business owner, you should:
• encourage staff to report any suspicious purchases or behaviour to management immediately, and
• report any concerns to the National Security Hotline on 1800 123 400.
As an employee, you should:
• report any suspicious purchases or behaviour to your manager
• note the key facts, such as the appearance and behaviours of customers acting suspiciously, and
• report any concerns to the National Security Hotline on 1800 123 400.
Every piece of information gathered is important and could provide the missing link for security or intelligence operations.
